Dr Robert Cochran

(FACEBOOK)

Dr Robert Cochran graduated from Vanderbilt University Medical School, and completed his residency in internal medicine and neurology at the University of Texas and Duke University. In 1963, he began private practice in Nashville, Tennessee. Over the years, he saw thousands of people with chronic pain that did not seem to go away, even with treatment. In the 1990s, he became the co-director of the Pain Center at Centennial Hospital, also in Nashville. His experience working with chronic pain sufferers led him to study commonalities between them. He is now considered one of the foremost experts in chronic pain and the influence that psychiatry has on pain.

Article: Killer Pain

Quote: "I hope with this book people will quit having as many operations as they do," Cochran says. "I hope they'll realize they're not suffering from want of character or want of spirit. They have a disease, and if they can accept depression as a disease, they can accept that they have a disease. It is a chemical imbalance."

Quote: "Clinical depression, at its root, is a medical illness of the brain resulting from abnormal functioning of the brain’s chemicals. Sometimes a depressed teen can start feeling better just by going to therapy. In other cases, the symptoms of depression don’t respond fully to therapy; if teens still aren’t feeling better with therapy alone, then a psychiatrist might consider prescribing an antidepressant to help correct the chemical imbalance that underlies depression."

SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education)

SAVE was one of the nation’s first organizations dedicated to the prevention of suicide. Their work is based on the foundation and belief that suicide is preventable and everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide.

Quote: "Depression and depressive illnesses are classified as mood disorders in the medical field, including everything from Major Depression to Dysthymia. They have a number of symptoms that affect people socially, occupationally, educationally, interpersonally, etc. How does one become depressed? Basically, here’s how it works: the nerves in our brain don’t touch each other, but rather pass messages from one to the next through chemicals called neurotransmitters. We need just the right amount of this chemical between the nerves to pass the exact same message to the next nerve. If there isn’t enough of that chemical, the message doesn’t get passed along correctly and in this case, depression or a depressive illness can result. When it comes to depressive disorders the chemicals most frequently out of balance are serotonin and norepinephrine. A person living with depression oftentimes experiences completely different thoughts before and after a depressive episode. This can be a result of a chemical imbalance and can lead to the person not understanding the options available to help them relieve their suffering."
